We were alerted to the plight of some poorly pigs, including pregnant sows, who were in desperate need of help. An urgent email, received from another sanctuary that wanted to help them but were unable to take them, read as follows: 'We have been contacted by a concerned person local to us about a group of pigs that are starving. 1 or 2 being found dead. The owner works away a few days a week. He struggles to feed his pigs. Is there any way you can help? Owner, not wanting to send them to slaughter, is offering them free to good home… but no one wants starving pigs.'
Trading Standards were also involved with helping these pigs and kind locals were doing their best to feed the hungry animals in an increasingly desperate situation. We agreed to take in the survivors, several of whom are not only emaciated but also have a serious skin condition. The owner, who had allowed the pigs to free-range over acres of land. had got out of his depth looking after them and was pleased that we were offering them a home.
We will settle them all into a quarantine area to receive veterinary treatment and small regular feeds of nutritious food to help them recover. If you would like to donate to help towards caring for these pigs, please consider making a donation below
